1.2 The Inuit myth of Amarok
The day the wolf’s spirit came to the aid of man.
For the people living in arctic regions (Greenland, Canada and Alaska in particular), the wolf is a sacred animal because it helps man to feed himself. According to Inuit legend, Amarok is the spirit of the wolf. It is to him that Kaila, the god of the sky, was called upon to solve the problems of the Inuit who complained of having only weak and unhealthy caribou to eat. Kaila therefore asked Amarok to set the wolves on the tracks of the caribou in order to kill the weak leaving the strong to reproduce thus creating a better herd allowing the Inuit to feed themselves and stay in good health.
